artTILE 2010 opens on May 1st at indigenous, a handcrafted gallery, featuring more than 700 ceramic tiles created by thirty-five exceptional artists, individually honoring the tradition of the American art tile.
“a slab of clay, endless possibilities”
indigenous presents artTILE 2010, our first exhibit dedicated to the American tradition of ceramic tiles. artTILE 2010 will feature over 700 dynamic ceramic tiles ranging from low-relief 2-inch tile to high-relief sculptural 20” tile; the common denominator, a slab of clay. A slab of clay truly represents endless possibilities.
Home to Rookwood Pottery, Cincinnati already has an established reputation for artistic clay and tile production. Through our production of a strong, focused exhibit showcasing how contemporary artists transform slabs of clay into their own art, indigenous continues to promote the awareness and appreciation of this time-honored art form.
artTILE 2010 is an invitational exhibit featuring 35 exceptional artists specially selected to display a wide range of designs, sizes, prices, and techniques offering a collection with great scope and depth. Hand-built, carved, pressed, stamped, molded, and one-of-a-kind art tiles will be on view. Styles range from whimsical and contemporary to the traditional aesthetics inherent to the arts and craft movement. Imagery is also diverse, from beautiful nature-inspired motifs of trees, flowers, and wildlife to the modern day spin on “missed connections” from Craigslist - artTILE 2010 delivers something for everyone. This is an exhibit to experience.
common clay curiosities:
- Can most of the tiles featured in artTILE 2010 be used in a traditional home installation? -Yes!
- What else can I do with tiles? How do I feature tiles in my home without installation?
-Display just one or a collection hanging on a wall
-coordinate a series of tiles on wall with other artworks to tell your own artistic story
-Showcase tiles on stands accenting a bookshelf or mantle
-Present tiles leaning on a picture rail
